What Is an Orphan (Orphelin) Bet in Roulette?

In roulette, an Orphan Bet (also known as Orphelin Bet) covers a specific group of numbers that are not sequential on the roulette wheel. These numbers are referred to as "orphans" because they don’t belong to the two main sectors of the wheel covered by other special bets.

Which Numbers Are Covered?

The Orphan Bet covers the following eight numbers:
1, 6, 9, 14, 17, 20, 31, 34

These numbers are divided into two separate groups on the roulette wheel.

How to Place an Orphan Bet

You will need five chips to fully cover the Orphan Bet using a combination of straight-up and split bets:

  • Straight-Up Bet:
    • Place 1 chip directly on number 1 (Pays 35 to 1)
  • Split Bets:
    • Place 1 chip between 6 and 9 (Pays 17 to 1)
    • Place 1 chip between 14 and 17 (Pays 17 to 1)
    • Place 1 chip between 17 and 20 (Pays 17 to 1)
    • Place 1 chip between 31 and 34 (Pays 17 to 1)

Example of Placing an Orphan Bet (European Roulette)

  1. Place 1 chip on 1 (straight-up).
  2. Place 1 chip on 6/9 (split).
  3. Place 1 chip on 14/17 (split).
  4. Place 1 chip on 17/20 (split).
  5. Place 1 chip on 31/34 (split).

This betting approach increases your chances of hitting one of these numbers compared to a single number bet, though payouts vary between straight-up and split bets.
